Reckless Love (Cory Asbury/Bethel)

Anybody else LOVE Cory Asbury’s new song (and Steffany Gretzinger’s amazing version!)… but you find yourself pushing and straining to get power on those high notes? Or does your voice get weak and breathy and it’s just not communicating that word… “reckless”…? Check out my tips and techniques to eliminate vocal tension and strain and hit those high notes on pitch! And… it might seem crazy… but try out my lyric pronunciation strategies to create maximum efficiency in your voice as you sing this song! I’ve demonstrated in both the key of F for guys and B for girls, but if you’re singing it in a different key, just apply these same principles!

I’m singing this Sunday after next. I’m nervous because the person who would always sing this is known for killing it! Following in her footsteps feels a little scary. Praying for release of this spirit of fear and comparison.

    Hey! Sorry, somehow I missed your question! For the most part, I would recommend going along with the vowel sounds as per the video, as it is more about the mouth shape you’re in, and making that efficient. But if there are any that feel very strange or make your voice sound a way that you don’t prefer, feel free to change it! 🙂

Hey Charmaine ! I’m currently working on this song in the key of C, the highest note being C4. I combine it with the vocal work out from MYV “Playing To Your Strength” that aims to correct a nasal voice as I believe I sould nasal when singing close to that C4 area. I think this is because I try to engage sufficient pharyngeal resonance not to start belting.

I’ve got a question about singing in chest or in a mix of chest/pharyngeal close to the bridge : for example C4, C#4 and maybe D4 for guys. When we do it should we feel like we are engaging the vocal cords a lot ? That’s what I feel when singing on that spot and I was wondering if I was maybe going too hard. I feel it might be the case because now after working out with this I definitely feel in my throat like I did something. I think I would feel some fatigue if I add to sing like this for an extended period of time.

So how should that C4/C#4 sound and feel if I’m still in chest/pharyngeal ? Maybe it would be best for me to submit an analyze my voice recording ?

  Hey Joel! Singing in a mix on those C/D notes WILL feel like you are engaging the vocal muscles MORE than just singing low, or singing higher in a pure head voice… but it shouldn’t hurt or feel extremely fatigued during or afterwards—and it should be sustainable to sing for awhile that way. It’s hard to say without hearing your voice, so yes, submit a recording if you’d like—but it sounds like you’re most likely pushing too much chest in your mix on those notes, and/or not narrowing your mouth enough.

Within 40 minutes after this tutorial was online, I was already watching.
As I always do, I typed down the ‘worship fonetics’ of the lyrics.
Especially – in my own words – the ‘walking consonants’ are very helpful.
If you read the sheet music of the song in F*, you can see that the text is written above the notes:

Be (F) – fore (A) I (A) spoke (A) a (G) word (G).
With ‘worship fonetics’ it becomes:
Bi (F) – foh (A) Ah (A) spoh (A) ka (G) wuh[d] (G)
So instead ‘a’ on the G, it is singing ‘ka’ on the G.

What makes the song different is the unique 6/8 pattern of the intro and the first verse starting with an upstroke on the guitar.
Learning that pattern was not too difficult, but still I could’nt get the song going.
Now with ‘ka’ instead of ‘a’ I can create the atmosphere I want.
