    So I was able to achieve the mix in higher notes and it sounded full and I was comfortable singing. However, today while leading worship, I went back to old pulling chest for high notes. Is this normal?

      Hey! Yes, totally normal! Old muscle memory comes racing back when we lead worship—frustrating I know! The more you do the exercises, over time the new muscle memory will replace the old, and become instinct to use your mix (and not push up chest!) as you lead worship!

    Wow! Mine is definitely playing it safe. I’m trying to convince myself it’s like throwing a baseball. I remember by husband telling my son…if you throw safe you may always throw a strike, but it was also get hit to the fence. You have to throw hard. At first, there will be control issues, but it will get better. Now to just get braver and do it! I’m just fearful of the tone. I’m not sure it’s pleasing. 🤷

      Hey Pam! I hear ya—but the only way for the tone to improve is to go for it! Let it out, let it be free, let your voice get comfortable with these coordinations, and then you’ll be able to tweak the way it sounds.

    One of the things that really resonated with me was the statement you said about overthinking way too much when singing and ‘playing it safe’. I tend to tense up when overthinking everything and end up not enjoying the process and just getting frustrated with myself. I need to stop playing it safe and go for the gusto, get out of my comfort zone and have FUN!

    Thanks for this lesson! I found the last part on singing the sounds without taking a breath before the lyrics to be very useful. And also to choose a sound that rhymes with the lyrics to give a good and seamless transition.

    In singing in a power mix with loudness, my voice doesn’t sound as smooth and as deep as when I sing in a normal volume. Should I be aiming for a deep and smooth tone even in a power mix or is it supposed to sound more nasal, brighter and less deep?

      Hey Sherlyn! Glad you found those techniques useful! Typically, the higher we go in our range, the more the tone will take on a brighter quality, less deep (because of the mix of pharyngeal/head voice). The addition of the pharyngeal in the mix is also what helps our voice take on more volume/intensity. Remember that we’re aiming for a SIMILAR tone throughout our range—it won’t be the exact SAME! So I wouldn’t worry too much about what you’re describing—allow the voice to take on a brighter nasality, and still stay grounded in your chest voice in the mix and you can have the best of both worlds! 🙂
