This in-depth course will teach you how to truly be an artist with your voice—by learning to explore and master vocal tone, texture, dynamics, vibrato, phrasing and more. Through instruction, vocal exercises and song application, you’ll learn how to directly apply these concepts to your role as a vocalist on your worship team, how to choose the right “fit” for each moment in worship, and how to discover your unique, God-given voice.

Part 1: Foundations for Vocal Success

01 // Introduction

In this introductory lesson, we’ll outline the features of the course; review the basics of singing, anatomy, and resonance; as well as lay out the expectations you should have for embarking on this course... and for your vocal improvement!

02 // Resonance Part 1

In this lesson, we’ll dive into all things resonance! We’ll talk about the importance of developing a strong foundation of chest, head, and pharyngeal resonance, and how we can mix them together to achieve incredible strength, stamina, and range in our voice. We’ll talk through different ways of visualizing the mix of resonance, and Charmaine will take you through a vocal workout step-by-step, exercise by exercise, with both male and female demonstrations.

03 // Resonance Part 2

This lesson will build upon Part 1, adding new exercises and strategies to your resonance vocal workout.

04 // Effective Practice Strategies

In this lesson, Charmaine will take you through her top 10 strategies for effective vocal training and practicing—the what, why, when, how, and where to practice—so that you can ensure you’re getting the most out of your voice!

05 // Breathing

This lesson will cover the foundations of breathing for singing. We’ll learn how to sing while engaging and supporting from the diaphragm, how to take in efficient breaths, and how to build your lung capacity for holding long phrases. Charmaine will take you through a breathing workout step-by-step, exercise by exercise, with both male and female demonstrations.

06 // Getting Rid of Tension

In this lesson, we’ll learn how to get rid of some of the biggest voice killers… tension and strain in our singing! We’ll talk about the importance of warming up the voice, and go through exercises for getting rid of jaw, tongue, throat, and body tension—to give your voice a whole new kind of freedom when you sing! Charmaine will take you through a tension-busting workout step-by-step, exercise by exercise, with both male and female demonstrations.

07 // Expanding Your Range Part 1

In this lesson, we’ll talk about why expanding our range is important for all worship team singers, both worship leaders and background vocalists, and how we can expand both our low and high range by finding freedom and flexibility in the voice. We’ll discuss the importance of building both a solid chest voice and vocal fry coordination in the voice in order to find freedom in the low notes, and Charmaine will take you through a low range vocal workout step-by-step, exercise by exercise, with both male and female demonstrations.

08 // Expanding Your Range Part 2

This lesson will build upon Part 1, adding new exercises and strategies to your vocal workout. We’ll talk about the different “gears” in the voice, and how we can shift gears smoothly and efficiently in order to find freedom in our high (and super-high!) range. Charmaine will take you through a high range vocal workout step-by-step, exercise by exercise, with both male and female demonstrations.

Part 2: Discovering Your Sound

09 // Finding Your Sweet Spot

Welcome to Part 2 of “Master Your Voice”, where we begin to explore the potential that God has designed your vocal instrument for! In this lesson, you’ll learn how to identify your voice type and how to find the “sweet spot” in your vocal range (and why that’s important!).

10 // Identifying Your Natural Tone

This lesson will build on Lesson 9, as we continue to explore your voice through vocal exercises and song application! Here we’ll talk about what qualities make your voice (and other voices) unique, and we’ll explore different sounds that the mix voice can take on.

11 // Playing To Your Strengths

So often, we’re quick to point out our vocal weaknesses, but not our strengths. In this lesson, through vocal exercises and song application, we’ll explore what you do best, and how you can play to those strengths in order to overcome your vocal weaknesses. Learning to understand and value your natural, unique vocal qualities is an important part of vocal mastery!

12 // The Art of Singing Vowels

In this lesson, you’ll learn important (life-changing?!) strategies and techniques for singing vowels, both to strengthen your resonance and vocal stability, and to achieve different stylistic qualities in your voice.

13 // The Art of Singing Consonants

This lesson will build on Lesson 12 as we continue to explore the most efficient ways to pronounce song lyrics. Charmaine will take you through a set of song application exercises that will help you discover and master the art of vocal phrasing, so you can tackle any worship song with ease!

14 // The Power Voice

Time to build your big, full, belt-it-out power voice! Through exercises and song application, you’ll discover how to get the most out of your voice in the big moments! The power voice workout will build your vocal stamina and power big-time!

15 // The Light Voice

In this lesson, we’ll explore the what, when, why and how of singing softly, and how to build stability in your voice so you can sing lightly without your voice cracking and breaking! The light voice workout will increase your vocal flexibility and add beauty and freedom to your voice!

16 // Playing with Texture

In this lesson, we’ll explore how we can achieve multiple sound qualities as we play with texture in our voice. We’ll explore breathy, falsetto tones and gritty, edgy, textured sounds… and learn how to use them in our songs! Charmaine will take you through a set of vocal workout exercises and song application exercises that will help you discover and master the art of vocal texture.

17 // Playing with Tone

Building on the concepts we’ve learned so far, in this lesson we’ll learn how to play with vocal tone, we’ll discover the importance of vocal diversity, and we’ll explore how we can use different tone colours to add dynamics, emotion, and originality to our worship songs and worship leading. Charmaine will take you through a set of vocal workout exercises and song application exercises that will help you discover and master the art of vocal tone, and help your embrace your unique vocal sound!

18 // Dynamics: Exploring Soft & Loud

In this lesson, we’ll learn the art of dynamics! Through vocal exercises and song application, we’ll explore the what, when, why and how of the crescendo and decrescendo… how to get louder and softer to create beauty in your songs (and without your voice cracking on you!).

19 // Crafting a Song Journey Part 1

Using everything we've explored in this section of the course, we’ll put it all together and dive deep into song application! In this lesson, you’ll learn how to craft a beautiful, emotional journey in a song and be able to make decisions on vocal tone moment-by-moment—both by understanding your unique vocal sound and by discerning what is best for each moment in worship.

20 // Crafting a Song Journey Part 2

As we finish off this section of the course, we’ll continue to explore how to craft a dynamic song journey!

Part 3: Exploring Vocal Style

21 // Intro: What is Vocal Style

In this lesson, we’ll talk about all things vocal style! We’ll explore why being an artist with our voice and our songs is so important—it’s not about “performance”... it’s about communicating the heart, beauty and creativity of God with passion and excellence!

22 // Phrasing & Articulation

In this lesson, you’ll learn important strategies for phrasing and articulation in your songs, and how to identify and achieve unique stylistic qualities in your voice. Charmaine will take you through a set of vocal workout exercises and song application exercises that will help you discover and master the art of vocal phrasing.

23 // Vibrato: The What, When & How

In this lesson, we’ll explore vibrato as it relates to contemporary worship—what it is, how to sing with it (or learn to sing without it), and most importantly… learn when and how much vibrato to use to fit the worship moment, both as a worship leader and a background vocalist. We’ll talk about how vibrato fits (or doesn’t fit) within your unique vocal sound and style! Charmaine will take you through a set of vocal workout exercises and song application exercises that will help you discover and master the art of vibrato.

24 // Trills, Licks & Runs

In this lesson, we’ll explore the tasteful use of trills, licks, and runs in a contemporary worship setting, and how to develop more flexibility and agility in your voice.

25 // The Art of the Ad Lib

In this lesson, you’ll learn improvisation techniques and strategies for how to fill the spaces in your songs, tastefully and worshipfully!

26 // Song Application: Playing with Style Part 1

Using everything we've explored in this section of the course, we’ll put it all together and dive deep into song application! In this lesson, you’ll learn further strategies on how to craft a journey in a song and be able to make decisions on vocal style moment-by-moment—both by understanding your unique vocal style and by discerning what is best for each moment in worship.

27 // Song Application: Playing with Style Part 2

Building on Lesson 26, we’ll continue to explore everything we’ve learned in this course through song application! We’ll also learn how, as background vocalists, we can use our voice to serve our team, our leader, and the worship setting in the best way possible!

28 // Where to Go From Here

What a journey! To finish off the course, we’ll review the concepts we’ve learned, assess how we’ve improved and what still needs work, and talk about how to move forward in strength and confidence!
